Think Before Using Electricity

People spend months planning a vacation, weeks planning holiday decorations and hours planning an outfit to wear. Why shouldn’t we put as much thought and planning in our energy usage as we do other daily activities? Here are a few items to think about:

* Figure out what you want from the fridge before opening the door. Nothing wastes more energy than opening the freezer or refrigerator door and standing there trying to figure out what you want. Chances are, you already know what’s in the refrigerator, and opening the door will not make items magically appear.

* Turn your computer off when you won’t be using it for more than 15 minutes. Computers use electricity and when computers are left on for a long period of time, they will continue to use electricity. If you know you’re not going to be using the computer, don’t rely on the screen saver to kick in. Just turn it off completely.

* Take shorter showers. Yes, this will help save water as well, which is a great goal, but it also helps save energy. Make sure you have everything you need – shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream and more before you start the shower so you don’t need to jump out and grab any supplies.

* If you’re not using a room, close it off. First off – close the vents so the air conditioner or heating unit doesn’t have to work so hard to cool or heat that room. Then – simply close the door.

By taking a few minutes and planning out some small, daily ways to conserve electricity, you personally are contributing to our overall conservation efforts.
