Keeping Cool and Warm
One *hot* topic, if you’ll pardon the expression, is how to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Everyone wants to be comfortable in their own home without the need to add or shed layers of clothing. But – there are additional options other than just adjusting the thermostat.
One great way to help keep cool in the summer is to install and use ceiling fans. When installing ceiling fans, please make sure you read the instructions carefully. Most ceiling fans have a switch that will turn blades clockwise or counterclockwise. In the summer, you want to make sure that the air is being pushed downward in order to circulate the cool air that lingers down by our feet. In the winter, reverse the fan rotation direction and you will instead pull air upwards in order to circulate the warm air that circulates around the ceiling.
Portable fans, as well as portable heaters, can help alleviate the use of an all-over air conditioner or central heating system. You can localize the cooling or heating systems to ensure that you are getting the air treatment without having to heat or cool rooms in which you’re not present. In addition, you can look for those portable units that are safe for the family to use and marked as energy efficient.
Don’t heat or cool when you’re not at home. If you’re leaving for work and its cold outside, set the thermostat to a lower temperature. You won’t be home and no one will be around to enjoy the electrical usage. It really does cost more to keep the cooling or heating units running when no one is home than it is to just adjust for when you are home.
Expect to be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. Unlike the old adage to keep the house at a set temperature all year round, there’s really nothing wrong with keeping the thermostat at 75 in the summer and 68 in the winter. During nice spring or autumn days, simply turn the units off and open the windows.
