How to Save Electricity in Your Business

Today in any business wherever electricity is used. The use of electricity accounts to about 40 percent of the total cost of business. Making use of efficient technologies at work will help increase profitability by lowering costs.

Save electricity on computers and all other office equipments

Many people are not aware that a single computer can use 75% less energy each year if only it is kept off overnight and during the weekends. The fastest and simplest way to save energy is to apply the basic and simple rule. When a computer is not required or is not in use remember to switch it off. Encourage and educate all the staff to be more proactive in turning off electronic equipment when not in use. A simple one but even a mobile phone charger can consume electricity adding up to the bigger cost, so unplug the chargers when you’re not using them.

Turn off the monitors in case you are not using them for more than 15 minutes so that you save more energy, remember screen savers is not an option to save power. Leaving your computer on overnight will not only consume more electricity but also will add to the wear and tear and ultimately will costs money. Encourage and train the staff to turn their computers off every night, and when on holiday. It will save you electricity cost up to $100 per PC. Wherever possible try and use laptop computers as they normally consume 70 to 90% less energy than a desktop computers.

Whenever you are replacing any kind of appliances in your business, always purchase the most efficient appliances you can. Usually, the best and efficient appliances come from ENERGY STAR, which is a global mark of energy efficiency. Only the finest products that use the smallest amount energy can bear the Energy Star rating. Make sure whether or not your IT equipment has any kind of energy saving modes that can be enabled. If enabled, most of the new PC monitors will power down when the computers are not in use. Whenever you buy or lease any equipment, always ask for the most energy efficient models. Most of the photocopiers and printers usually come with power saving features, make sure you keep this in mind as well.

UPS is primarily designed to sustain constant power to computers and other equipment if the electricity fails. In case you have UPS installed in your office, make sure it’s size and capacity is perfect, reason being an excess capacity will increase the running costs.

Save energy on heating and air conditioning

Make sure office furniture or stock is not obstructing your heating and air conditioning equipment. This will automatically reduce energy efficiency and increase the running costs and may also be unsafe.

Try and avoid using portable heaters if your office is centrally heated. However, if they are required in some areas or at certain times, make sure you look at reason and implement a safe system to control their use. Also make sure you turn off all unnecessary lighting in order to reduce the heat load.

Avoid instantaneous heating and cooling. Always set the air conditioning and heating controls so that there is not confliction between each other. Try and stop placing thermostats close to heat sources such as photocopiers etc.

Regularly clean and replace air filters. Also fix shades and awnings in order to prevent overheating and glare from sunlight. Organize a regular maintenance check of your air conditioning system.
