Cover Up to Save Electricity
Just like wearing a coat in the winter helps conserve our own bodily heat, many other items also require a covering or coat to help in conservation efforts. You may not always think about these items and they may not always be easy to replace, but covering up can go a long way towards reducing overall total utility cost.
If you have a chimney, make sure there is a damper in the flue. The dampers, which are not all that expensive, will allow you to manage air drafts. These dampers can be kept closed to ensure that air conditioned air won’t be lost up the chimney and cold frigid air won’t be coming into your house when you’re nice and snuggly warm. There are multiple types and manufacturers of dampers, so search around to find that one that meets your specific needs.
Cover up your water heater. This is especially important for older water heaters as the newer ones may be insulated already. You can purchase a thermal insulating blanket for your water heater at almost any do-it-yourself or home improvement store. Just make sure you know how to cut out sections from your blanket in order to be able to read the label on the water heater and reach the heater’s knobs and buttons.
Use your window blinds. In the summer, when the sun is streaming in and the room is already too hot, close the blinds. If your house sits on an east-west angle and the sun streams in constantly, you may wish to check for special blinds and window covers that help reduce the sun’s heat from coming in.
A few minor coverings and you’ll be amazed at the cost savings in your energy bill.
