Check your Lights and Save Electricity

One notorious energy burners are light bulbs. Unless you’re Amish, you need to turn lights on for work and family time at least once per day. However, accidentally leaving lights on or using the wrong wattage can significantly increase your energy usage, which then significantly increases your energy costs. Especially in this day and age of concerns over a recession, every little bit helps. Let’s discuss a few of these ideas.

Install motion sensors on rooms where sensors make sense! This is a novel idea, but it definitely won’t work for every room. If you have a play room with kids running in and out every few minutes, the sensors will drive everyone crazy. But – for rooms where you know that the lights need to be turned off every time you leave the room, the sensors make sense. Think of how a sensor will work for a laundry room, a little-used bathroom or storage shed.

Size – oops – I mean wattage matters. If you don’t use the light for reading or sewing or some similar activity, purchase a lower watt bulb. The lower the watt, the less energy they use. Of course – traditional bulbs still use more energy than the new fluorescent bulbs, but every little bit counts!

Think Feng Shui for electricity! Plan the lights in your room. Plan the placement and the direction so that fewer lights are needed. In addition, plan which light you’ll turn on when you’re reading or which light you’ll turn on when it starts getting dark outside.

Overall – just put some thought and planning into your lighting situation. Just a few simple changes can make a huge difference to your energy usage and your energy bill.
